Back to the place we went for the driving clinic in December. A lot of the same people were there and since her ponies weren't ready to compete, we decided to volunteer. Driving clubs can always use extra hands for everything and of course they were happy to have us. </p><p>The TD for the event was Keith Yutzy that has done them not only in Texas but also in Az when I competed there. His wife Linda was also doing the scoring I believe, as she has also done a Lot of those as well. Eileen Leek was in charge, Trisha Clements was in charge of volunteers and there was plenty of good company to go around. </p><p>The judge for the event was a really nice lady out of Indiana named Kristin Wittington. She had a Lot of helpful comments for everyone and strongly suggested for everyone to scribe at least once. That's one thing I haven't done yet, but at some point maybe I will get to. </p><p>I also got to ride on one of the carriages as a navigator or 'Gator as we kindly call them. What a Blast! I think the woman I rode with probably got sick of me saying how much fun it was back there and I'm pretty sure I ate more than a few bugs because I was smiling the whole time. There was only 19 competitors it all seemed to go so fast, but that's pretty normal when you're on course. If course once you finish, you want to go again! She won the cones portion for Training Level, Single Horse and placed 3rd in the marathon. Not sure how she did in dressage, but she said several times- it's not their strong suit. Where have I heard that before? Lol </p><p>I learned a few things while I was there but I will list that all in another post. It was nice to be back on course at a competition and around such a great group of people. Looking forward to getting back into competition....</p>Cut-N-Jumphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10355349642284506192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3843857563961192340.post-29480255393012648802022-04-25T13:03:00.000-06:002022-04-25T13:03:20.875-06:00Grass Ridge cones<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Lots of pics, so get your drinks and snacks. This was the only time that I was able to take Kat there to compete. This was also the last of the driving competitions hosted by Grass Ridge since one of the owners had passed away. The wife had lost her battle with cancer and it wasn't long after she passed and they hosted this event in her honor, that her husband also passed away as well. I've wondered what happened to the facility and by now it's likely houses or something. Sad to see horse facilities pushed out for the sake of development. 😢</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguP5Z1DVKNttG9tt7kMdEfXEwjB7b29i-0u3p1VTysDBUP4Qo7mdanx6C4zAcM0nPtsxMO2HzYe8z-lADThwulvfo-dQ4AK6f3p-8py06Q_Q9CyJriCkCusLBvfeQ6N1XhvTeQuELa41p3Qx7laP1ZfAZ6UvK5CMb39Zi0gpxaP06coIpfg_HC6vdkkw/s320/007.JPG" width="320" /></div><p>Here are a few of the photos from our dressage test. I haven't located the actual test sheet with our scores so I don't remember what all we got for each movement. My friend Sheri's husband Dave took these pictures and also pictures of us in cones.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9m7J24j7sAnvH32FQ0ecU8GwmVl6fwNdphzYGBE_ZGW6i6MlVEdaNmcFZiI_NYvU4huXV2Yf2Zjy2ImTS6vNfCmks1CqMLbpIO0KhFt1Lf_5WU4ISiWk193fZFfAj-TEc2LKHNJZFzLRPnQY12332eu3TbVh6CfPtNRbZBKV-GNm2DcQD11SvvUMAoA/s4608/015.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9m7J24j7sAnvH32FQ0ecU8GwmVl6fwNdphzYGBE_ZGW6i6MlVEdaNmcFZiI_NYvU4huXV2Yf2Zjy2ImTS6vNfCmks1CqMLbpIO0KhFt1Lf_5WU4ISiWk193fZFfAj-TEc2LKHNJZFzLRPnQY12332eu3TbVh6CfPtNRbZBKV-GNm2DcQD11SvvUMAoA/s320/015.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p>Here Kat is stretching out in the extended trot part of our test. The ADT's actually allow for boots in all parts of the competition. We go from dressage straight over to the cones portion so there's not much time to stop and add, remove or change equipment. I've changed bits before but it's not fun being crunched for time.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx_Jj6bPlLukno9lWGX_KCpzHXRhZRDluTlgGsAZeqHdAkOnB6szhb3dBt1xZoETg0pwwxl08GgSzE-1bxaEu2LLSD_U48eVhv42DfQmfhHJpl1biaZdSCAo9m7iH1Y9mBnZN3BPnAbaCKMHO5tb0pKLyJ3hyRMkPjBbawjaPZ_v2pZBlKOC5tfr2_fQ/s4608/023.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx_Jj6bPlLukno9lWGX_KCpzHXRhZRDluTlgGsAZeqHdAkOnB6szhb3dBt1xZoETg0pwwxl08GgSzE-1bxaEu2LLSD_U48eVhv42DfQmfhHJpl1biaZdSCAo9m7iH1Y9mBnZN3BPnAbaCKMHO5tb0pKLyJ3hyRMkPjBbawjaPZ_v2pZBlKOC5tfr2_fQ/s320/023.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p>Here we are back to the working trot. This was our 3rd time out at Prelim. The first time was at the Apache Junction ADT. The second time was at the Coolidge ADT. I know that the dressage test had circles, serpentines and a lengthened trot, but otherwise is not much different than training level.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmoBN27JC5fv_U6MjxVavo_AP5esDCxFQ11rFYU_JjxrGAtSrFyE6lW5pW671B_y0CMM1AoBowPW_b92tAz0fUSVstJXJrYWmOOz6KW4oa3cqPSnWy_QKhqFrxM8jBDA1lya2TKNfb4gNCM1ywIwzkIc7qJ3hRsycq--Lne0wKu1JeXfue7-V7s27aRQ/s4608/025.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmoBN27JC5fv_U6MjxVavo_AP5esDCxFQ11rFYU_JjxrGAtSrFyE6lW5pW671B_y0CMM1AoBowPW_b92tAz0fUSVstJXJrYWmOOz6KW4oa3cqPSnWy_QKhqFrxM8jBDA1lya2TKNfb4gNCM1ywIwzkIc7qJ3hRsycq--Lne0wKu1JeXfue7-V7s27aRQ/s320/025.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p>Yes my little man and I were all matchy-matchy. Dinner on Saturday night was at a pleasant little place and the food was really good. The gentleman doing the clinic Tom O'Caroll, was with us and quite a pleasant man. When I asked how long he had been driving and how he got started? He chuckled and said he can't remember a time when he didn't drive. He had grown up in Ireland and drove the horse to town once a week- 20 miles away- to deliver the produce raised on the family farm. While he was there he would pick up whatever supplies they needed and drive the horse the 20 miles back home again. I can't even imagine. I'm sure at the time it was just what you do. I think it would just be so cool and definitely life at a slower pace. </p><p>Sunday was a clinic of sorts where a few of us were invited to bring our ponies and give the local pony club members a chance to try driving. Of course Kat was a perfect gentleman for the harnessing demo and was a little wound since he hasn't driven in a while. A few of the kids were so excited to drive him and he handled it really well considering nobody else has ever really driven him. A few of the kids were thrilled to take the reins and talk about how their horse should do this Really well. </p><p>Luckily before the trip I had checked the weather forecast. While it wasn't bad here at home, overnight in Austin it was down to 38° which was quite cold for the ponies. We brought their blankets along so they were fine and thankfully there was also no wind which I was told by the facility owner that typically there is. Some places just have a lot of wind and with it blowing as a constant, it gets old fast. </p><p>We brought my friends pony along just for the experience. While she didn't exactly handle the trip very well, she did fine once we were there. She traveled with her nose to the floor and at one point when she brought her head up she had watery blood running from both nostrils. Poor baby was stressing. I would tell Kat to reassure her and tell her it would be fine. Once she was off the trailer and walked around she seemed to be ok. </p><p>Towards the end of the morning I could tell Kat was Starting to wear down and it looked like he needed to pee. Seem like a good idea so I took him back to the trailer to unhitch so we could both use the bathroom. At that point there was discussion of putting to the other pony and it seemed like a good idea. As I got her out and started to harness up the group started to trickle back over to the arena where the trailers were parked and lunch was being served. This was good since her pony was getting used to people and everything going on around her. Earlier they had a PA system too so she got used to that too. </p><p>By the time I had her put to the cart everyone else had come back over and the dressage arena we were using was clear. This worked to our advantage as her pony had seen the carriages going around from her stall and now she was getting to go out into the field where we could work. This pony is super talented and rather green but she has a really good mind to her. I used her Liverpool bit for just a little extra control should I need it and it was perfect for the occasion. We headed out to the field and I could tell she was feeling a little up, but she managed to hold it all together as we walked around so she could loosen up before getting to work.</p><p>The dressage arena was a big open field and quite lovely. We walked both directions did a lot of circles and some serpentine's. When she started to relax I asked the pony to trot and we got a lot of really good work in. Again we did a lot of big circles, smaller circles and serpentine's going both directions and she was really working nicely. She was still looking around at the horses in the other field and the arena where the stalls were, but that's ok. Horses do that when they are in new places. As she worked and started to blow off steam she really settled in and was moving quite nicely. We did some working trot and some extended trot, brought it back down to a walk and let her relax a little before doing some more trotting work. She's quite a lovely mare and when we found a good place to stop, I let her have a little rest and then headed back to unhitch. </p><p>By this time all of the kids and their parents were gone and it was just the event organizers left. They were all sitting in the stands talking and as I came into the arena they motioned for me to come over there. As I drove her up and stopped, they were all saying how they had been watching us work and she is a Really, Really nice moving pony. They had Lots of compliments and questions so I took her over to unhitch. </p><p>While we were talking I explained that this pony has had less than 20 drives on her and how at one point she had not been driven for almost a year, but I was able to just harness up and put her to the cart and she worked to fine. When the discussion of two major driving shows came up, everyone agreed that this pony could certainly hold her own and do well at either one. She's That. Good. I finally asked the group if there was anything we needed to work on? Tom spoke up and said, "What you're doing with her, keep doing That." Again I asked- Any suggestions? Tips? Things to do? Things to leave alone and not worry about??? There's always something to work on.... Again Tom said "She looks really good with what you're doing. Just keep doing That."</p><p>My mind was blown. Such good things to hear about a pony I have been bringing along and teaching to drive. Funny thing is, she was supposed to be a hunter pony and while she loves to jump, she enjoys driving more. Now she just needs to travel more and we need to find or arrange more play dates she can go to, to put miles on her. </p>Cut-N-Jumphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10355349642284506192noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3843857563961192340.post-50554339229806511882021-08-07T07:51:00.004-06:002021-08-07T07:51:00.240-06:00Working out<p>Lately I have been working my ponyman since his hooves are back to almost where they should be. When it comes to our horses/ponies, we are their advocate and we need to stand up for their best interests, safety and their health. This includes hoof care. </p><p>I have posted here before about dealing with an inferior farrier and the issues involving Kat's feet. I trimmed his feet before and have no problem trimming them again. Then I switched farriers and while the new guy does a good job and all, for some reason I can't get him to take enough hoof off when trimming Katman. </p><p>At 4 weeks the other pony in the barn that wasn't growing hoof- was already long and starting to chip the edges. She has not been on hoof supplements this last month and neither has Kat. And for not being in supplements, he was overreaching really bad at the walk the other night. Normally he overreaches at the trot when he is due for a trim- to the point you can hear him literally clicking with every stride as his hooves make contact. </p><p>So at 4 weeks I sent a text they needed a trim. She's starting to chip, he's overreaching and how can we get this done? The other boarder that moved in with 5 horses and uses him now too, hers are still in good shape and can go a little longer. A week or two later and I let him know that if I need to, I can trailer out and meet him somewhere to get them done. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ8-WdZjp7GrtcVmRg0C5a-KA8_iLyktu3dPGcm1ETZF7H1Rleh4xFAIrD92sgs3QABL_3BbgB6aeNoTmCKsu-bhyphenhyphennRnn9PaDcoB_SiuUR72HOI4FWy2xddg4hPBB9gBuxpEVqdajtsCT6/s2048/20210723_192244.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ8-WdZjp7GrtcVmRg0C5a-KA8_iLyktu3dPGcm1ETZF7H1Rleh4xFAIrD92sgs3QABL_3BbgB6aeNoTmCKsu-bhyphenhyphennRnn9PaDcoB_SiuUR72HOI4FWy2xddg4hPBB9gBuxpEVqdajtsCT6/s320/20210723_192244.jpg" /></a></div><p>Any wonder Why he might be overreaching at 4 weeks? </p><p>So I grabbed my nippers, knife, rasp and got to work. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWGBW5xxi1yFackWWqBJuOpijEgXzzxurXkrXwWU1vKR5xLA-9x97b0XLtE0gO7s8ORB73szU455clvtnHL08P17xuEVc2bBPbgJqYaT51FeACfRG4shCBoB2OvxZ5a3v4c2Hp9wimx20Y/s2048/Message_1627086049850.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWGBW5xxi1yFackWWqBJuOpijEgXzzxurXkrXwWU1vKR5xLA-9x97b0XLtE0gO7s8ORB73szU455clvtnHL08P17xuEVc2bBPbgJqYaT51FeACfRG4shCBoB2OvxZ5a3v4c2Hp9wimx20Y/s320/Message_1627086049850.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>Right front was first and while it is a touch long still for him, it looks a whole lot better than it did. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIA2gUTBBP_u1R906is94e_eON8-tCuV-jJxAt9EtCqEMA79mkJQLDka9p6WPBWgbPP1AXNbh3XBumGdiE2YPzyxun-19AqAsupONjwaLBoHGkX0ReqWwBMiON_FNE0ltYJs_efr89fjSD/s2048/Message_1627086111279.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIA2gUTBBP_u1R906is94e_eON8-tCuV-jJxAt9EtCqEMA79mkJQLDka9p6WPBWgbPP1AXNbh3XBumGdiE2YPzyxun-19AqAsupONjwaLBoHGkX0ReqWwBMiON_FNE0ltYJs_efr89fjSD/s320/Message_1627086111279.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>Nice and short like it should be and balanced once again. </p><p>Texting with a friend of mine that also uses the same farrier, she agreed that Kats feet should not be that long. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZxCZlUDmVtQ5UuVHu0HDJIoEr7V9dWrP8cWvn7KkII0E0k8Nv7eRN6QBONqNi6iniri3xFDgExllivTADIOA7C5r_jNXRS5MnS5_mjJTHP1YnxkTzkw10iB6KTRwJlDQKozikGL1fRjke/s2048/20210724_195522.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZxCZlUDmVtQ5UuVHu0HDJIoEr7V9dWrP8cWvn7KkII0E0k8Nv7eRN6QBONqNi6iniri3xFDgExllivTADIOA7C5r_jNXRS5MnS5_mjJTHP1YnxkTzkw10iB6KTRwJlDQKozikGL1fRjke/s320/20210724_195522.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>His heels should not be the length of my thumb. Rolling in a freshly bedded stall is something they all do and he is no exception. This time however, he got something in his right eye. <span>I whipped out my </span>bottle of Vetracyn ophthalmic gel and put a generous glob in his eye. In return I got back about a pea sized chunk of gray nasty something that was obviously causing the issue. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrBEnw4U9aIJsCxtHU7utvIbGOtQc6T6OULhK-Q25VbOOA-4RT9oCAHycdbdltjTWRHxF__ONYDEhtd9npEI339aetu9RmO0ygDW3Hd9aqcnHukSmSYjG87Wd30-jByCZ8-1vlsnfJ93w/s2048/20210516_200512.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrBEnw4U9aIJsCxtHU7utvIbGOtQc6T6OULhK-Q25VbOOA-4RT9oCAHycdbdltjTWRHxF__ONYDEhtd9npEI339aetu9RmO0ygDW3Hd9aqcnHukSmSYjG87Wd30-jByCZ8-1vlsnfJ93w/w400-h300/20210516_200512.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>The red part under the eyelid- this has recessed quite a bit but when it first happened that was sticking out under the eyelid and in plain sight on a much larger scale. He wasn't done yet though because next came a healthy glob of some terramycin an ophthalmic antibiotic. For $20-$25 a tube it is definitely something good to have in your first aid kit! His other eye also got a healthy dose of gel and salve just in case. Fly mask went on for the night and I hoped for the best. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNqtHQ3FgBICR9xBi9nKIt8KMrMnbPlG7IKsKTFWKho3tU-kYxZFq7KU_9dbSAfdem5mCyT5kcBQn5Sn3a4T8etrU7_JqYG2JmWwjdRRn1nvbIQAY6aUuajOl_Ekd76iOQ5Pp-cV8TH2gq/s2048/20210516_194227.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNqtHQ3FgBICR9xBi9nKIt8KMrMnbPlG7IKsKTFWKho3tU-kYxZFq7KU_9dbSAfdem5mCyT5kcBQn5Sn3a4T8etrU7_JqYG2JmWwjdRRn1nvbIQAY6aUuajOl_Ekd76iOQ5Pp-cV8TH2gq/s320/20210516_194227.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>The left eye still showing a little bit of pink irritation on the inside bottom. </p><p>The next day there was a marked improvement- swelling was almost gone and the eyelid was almost back to normal. I also had a plan for a better way to flush the eyes. </p><p>I have some packets of saline solution for flushing sinuses, so I took a handful of these to the barn. A bottle of water from the tack room fridge and a small container from the $1 store, I mixed up a batch of saline. A small syringe and we were good to go. Kat was again very patient while I rinsed his eyes and flushed away anything and everything caught in there. Another glob of terramycin and put the mask on again to wait to see. </p><p>A few days later and much improved. Still a little pink but no more swelling and he's not rubbing his face on things. It doesn't look like he suffered any injury to his eye or vision so that's always good. Kat and one of the other horses there have pretty fluffy winter coats that will take some time to shed out. My pony is lucky since I body clipped him. Speed up the process a bit... Fix the horse first and we can work on fixing us later. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For the English crowd long line work is not lost if you don't have a surcingle. Use what you have- saddle, bridle and a piece of baling twine. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ1_ca0zFRttH3ySJ9cMfomGfUylXDGzlOvKCAitDG3hO21heqDWpAgSJlAEQ_QizmjmvtMGXImk30TepqKOFTohlDqyN18P5yDEOoGLfOqPChhKqVumiqeLkBFQWggYdPhh7H7gFo49Nz/s2048/20201114_165200.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ1_ca0zFRttH3ySJ9cMfomGfUylXDGzlOvKCAitDG3hO21heqDWpAgSJlAEQ_QizmjmvtMGXImk30TepqKOFTohlDqyN18P5yDEOoGLfOqPChhKqVumiqeLkBFQWggYdPhh7H7gFo49Nz/w400-h300/20201114_165200.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Drop your irons and use the baling twine to tie them together underneath the horse. This is a little closer look and you can see the blue baling twine on the inside of the iron. Just like with a western saddle, this will limit the swing and keep them closer to the horse more like a surcingle. </div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoQquoXluxHJ8EIlxANFOzHBfQNCmxuuSwIg8MXihs2naeTPtMK-ElcK1v6q9Bkdgc-8HcrdhugmlOzBi-5_SI-FHkRglOpSkGPTgdhWc56iwiLgyhkhz3G7Zase2jdJcCgawLTf_2wLWs/s2048/20201114_165208.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoQquoXluxHJ8EIlxANFOzHBfQNCmxuuSwIg8MXihs2naeTPtMK-ElcK1v6q9Bkdgc-8HcrdhugmlOzBi-5_SI-FHkRglOpSkGPTgdhWc56iwiLgyhkhz3G7Zase2jdJcCgawLTf_2wLWs/w400-h300/20201114_165208.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>To keep your reins up and out of the way you can run them under your leathers and buckle them on top of the seat. This will still allow your horse plenty of room to stretch out and down when working. </p><p>In the past I have also seen the reins run under the flap and buckled on top of the seat. This shortens them a bit and works more like side reins, but for long line work- this doesn't help. You don't want your reins giving one signal and your long lines another. You can also either take them off altogether or twist them up, buckled around the neck and run thru the throatlatch on the bridle. Whatever works for you. Now you're ready to get to work and fix the horse. </p>Cut-N-Jumphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10355349642284506192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3843857563961192340.post-54575845848293727562020-10-09T05:05:00.007-06:002020-10-09T05:36:28.826-06:00Fine tuning<p>The cart has undergone some changes and now the overall picture is a better one, but... There are still a few more changes that could be made. </p><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left;">One would be bigger, solid wheels. Anything above training level does not allow pneumatic tires. If the wheels on this cart were a little bigger, it would help to level out the shafts giving a more balanced look. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg83cKttZCMpC_ALLwTZy5sXYD8Cw_rMTBrIb00hMHAMZL7a8U5AzTgYtRsm4GMMV-ikOtNI3c1vcKz9tWp3Dihh3tVyRJ0dBoIX4UlvUycjT-hi_iLm_VAdqJFJx5NVhAJN1KBf_LC0pye/s4160/20201006_191447.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3120" data-original-width="4160" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg83cKttZCMpC_ALLwTZy5sXYD8Cw_rMTBrIb00hMHAMZL7a8U5AzTgYtRsm4GMMV-ikOtNI3c1vcKz9tWp3Dihh3tVyRJ0dBoIX4UlvUycjT-hi_iLm_VAdqJFJx5NVhAJN1KBf_LC0pye/w640-h480/20201006_191447.jpg" width="640" /></a></div></span></div>The paint is another issue. While I like this color- Matte Sage Green- and it is a primer & paint all on one- it's coming off onto my harness and chipping in places. I may end up sanding it all down again, hitting it with a coat of primer and painting it a glossy black to match my other cart. Then if the color comes off anymore, it's black on black and not noticeable. <p></p><p><br /></p><p></p><p>Another thing that would help is to drop the tugs one more hole and straighten out the shafts. The straighter the line of draft, more level the shafts are and balanced the cart is- the more pleasant the overall picture and also the easier it is on the horse. </p><p>Another less noticeable necessity is the trace extenders. The length of traces are a bit short and although I bought extenders, I need the next one up. This will let the breeching keep the cart back off the ponys rear end which helps keep everything where it should be. </p><p>The last thing I need to work on is a pad for the harness saddle and also a sleeve for both the breast collar and the breaching. These will all make harness cleaning much easier since I can take off the 3 pieces and throw them in the wash. These also let me add a bit of color to the turnout to keep things fun. </p><p>*My apologies for the oversize pics. Blogger wouldn't allow me to use a smaller size with the format. Every time I tried to go back to a smaller size the text got all screwed up., stuff got shifted all around and the whole thing looked like a mess. Is anyone surprised? * </p>Cut-N-Jumphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10355349642284506192noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3843857563961192340.post-27682103090933494122020-09-04T05:47:00.002-06:002020-09-04T22:06:04.392-06:00Small changes <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">As I mentioned at the end of the last post there are a few small issues with the set up we had. I will start with one of the most glaring issues as it is the first thing Gary pointed out when I sent him the pics of this pony. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYEdvJgxx1RzS1QROKYFDSjaKNY6u8N_HLstytRFjBRk4Zl9wYa2VLJxr_LL0q0JHNxUNOTBO6G8bJZhXI8mraShy-1khpE4DPFzkQDJtbBTYhbhpXKsuVct0gmVPSDVzFJyaLENgIEmtX/s4160/20200808_185150.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3120" data-original-width="4160" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYEdvJgxx1RzS1QROKYFDSjaKNY6u8N_HLstytRFjBRk4Zl9wYa2VLJxr_LL0q0JHNxUNOTBO6G8bJZhXI8mraShy-1khpE4DPFzkQDJtbBTYhbhpXKsuVct0gmVPSDVzFJyaLENgIEmtX/w400-h300/20200808_185150.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><span style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>Look at where the shaft is and how high up it is in relation to the traces and 'the line of draft' as it is called. I let Gary know that there is room to punch holes and drop the tugs some which will fix part of the issue but the cart could also use bigger wheels too which would bring it Up a little in the back, helping to level out the shafts. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Problem #2 with this pic is the part of the shaft from the tug stop to the tip. The tug stop is typically closer to the tug so this tells me I may be able to let out the traces a few holes and forgo the trace extenders. Wahoo! But if the shaft and cart come forward where they should be, then the length of this part of the shaft comes into question. Not a problem. The tips are a little rough for my taste and I had gotten rubber stoppers to cram in them before. Trimming them off a little is not a problem.... They are also incredibly straight. The length and straightness both add to the problem of poking into the pony's neck when she tries to turn. Bigger sweeping turns aren't so bad, but smaller circles and tighter turns will be a problem. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA9Dhf-bKO-WdJSQLoiVwqfXQYsE5wD_y0sYqgKYlHZ8LCDHNVIZUPRufUl0TdwPwgEIj_bzrZJ3UVa8frffORXePXKsnNaOAZrNicwFZN-JlbetrDBfbDr8Vhb0lj42k2NKvpapKI7cT3/s960/IMG_6189.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="638" data-original-width="960" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA9Dhf-bKO-WdJSQLoiVwqfXQYsE5wD_y0sYqgKYlHZ8LCDHNVIZUPRufUl0TdwPwgEIj_bzrZJ3UVa8frffORXePXKsnNaOAZrNicwFZN-JlbetrDBfbDr8Vhb0lj42k2NKvpapKI7cT3/w400-h265/IMG_6189.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left;">Shaft level and line of draft seems to be an issue with me. Lol 😆 This was from the show in Luling a couple years ago. I had swapped out the marathon shafts for the straighter, more traditional shafts for the show- and forgot to drop the tugs on the harness to accommodate this. My bad! </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9dWX2LcNOFpoSp3oWMBlU5PedkoLYX3sRJy_gBKnkDRA-GiyyxN5Y4V1ZTSeqxXZ2O4sPQoPES8BD8l0d5PqZvaKUAgk_rlL3_5X2VzGU25xjsTaVDXIo9Qvc8LytmszNmKQBvz0-IVKv/s4160/20200808_185100.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3120" data-original-width="4160" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9dWX2LcNOFpoSp3oWMBlU5PedkoLYX3sRJy_gBKnkDRA-GiyyxN5Y4V1ZTSeqxXZ2O4sPQoPES8BD8l0d5PqZvaKUAgk_rlL3_5X2VzGU25xjsTaVDXIo9Qvc8LytmszNmKQBvz0-IVKv/w400-h300/20200808_185100.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></span><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: justify;">See how high up the shafts are in relation to the traces. As for the length and the lack of curve, both easily remedied by a trip to Lowe's for a pipe bender. I already had the pipe cutter and it didn't take much to measure from the tug stop out 12" and mark the shafts for cutting. Put the cutter on, spin it around a few times and done. File the edges smooth of the new cut, popped out the old plugs from the scrap ends and of course they won't fit damn the luck. No big deal because I wanted to bend the tips out and thought I may have to heat things up - which would melt the plugs anyways so this worked out. Another trip to Lowe's for the next size bigger plugs and some other things. </span></span><span style="clear: left; display: inline; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdZe69VQv8a0d3YEv-ocdMnTOQ5M_dgAJ8TkR93mHgwxLK978B3Lm_cGWPH5Z4mPIv4Ce6FS1hnPBroIM_hQOgL9fBq-A9EBE6MaBRxORnqBQAl_p0dYS30NIpAmjj9NmzG5aIlmKR9a-k/s2048/20200829_064557.jpg" style="clear: left; display: inline; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdZe69VQv8a0d3YEv-ocdMnTOQ5M_dgAJ8TkR93mHgwxLK978B3Lm_cGWPH5Z4mPIv4Ce6FS1hnPBroIM_hQOgL9fBq-A9EBE6MaBRxORnqBQAl_p0dYS30NIpAmjj9NmzG5aIlmKR9a-k/w400-h300/20200829_064557.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">I also found some Pale Sage paint that caught my eye so before I heated up the pipe to make bending them easier, I busted out the sander and some 80 grit to take off the layers of paint where it was chipping off anyways.... </span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: justify;">I measured </span><span style="text-align: justify;">6" in </span><span style="text-align: justify;">from the tip ends, bent the ends with the pipe bender and gave it a couple light coats of paint. Funny thing is, the cart was originally close to this same color when I got it several years ago. It was also bright red too at some time in the past. The sage seems to go nicely with the vinyl on the new seat. Now all that's left is finding new/ different/ bigger spoked wheels instead of the pneumatic wheels on it. Once you move up out of training level, pneumatic wheels are no longer allowed. But then there's always something more to consider... </span></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></div></div></div>Cut-N-Jumphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10355349642284506192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3843857563961192340.post-17272149605487783732020-08-17T17:16:00.003-06:002020-08-17T17:16:00.206-06:00Putting to<p> I know I have done a few attempt posts about putting a horse or pony to a cart and what is involved, but this time I have pictures to help the words make sense. With the help of a friend of mine at the barn and her pony starting in harness- here goes. </p><p>When putting a horse or pony to a cart or carriage it is always good to have two things. One is a header to stand in front of the horse and help keep them quiet and two is a routine. The days of fhe old west in the movies, when the actor runs outside, unties the horse, jumps on the carriage, flaps the reins while yelling HAAAA! and tearing away are bullshit. If the horse is wearing a bridle of any kind its not a good idea to use the bridle to tie them and if the horse is put to a cart or carriage, they are to be wearing a bridle and not tied. Any time you're working around an animal that outweighs and out muscles us like our horses and ponies do- everything should be about Safety first! Our own safety and that of the horse as well will help things go smoothly. </p><p>When I was training Kat I didn't often have a header and I taught him that when the bridle went on and I put you 'here' you are not to move until I am on the cart and have asked you to go. When we finished and we get back to our 'here' spot again, he was to stay put and don't move until everything was undone, I removed the cart shafts from the tugs and asked him to come forward. This is probably the first part of our routine- establish a 'Here' spot. This should be somewhere the horse is comfortable standing, where the cart is easily accessible and you have plenty of room to walk around both sides to fasten and unfasten everything. For the first several times putting them to and taking them away from the cart, I do it in the arena usually somewhere in the middle of the end by the gate. I have brought the cart out to where we will be hitching and unhitching and thus established our 'Here' spot. When you get to the point of competing, you're hauling to new places and sometimes showing out of your trailer so your 'Here' spot may be close to the trailer, but you will still establish a place where all of your hitching and unhitching happens. </p><p>So now that the harness is on, bridle and reins are on, cart is in the arena waiting and everything is ready, what happens next? Well there are 8 points you have to do and the first 2 are the shafts going into the tugs. This is the first part of putting to. Bring the horse around to stand in front of the cart to where you can bring the cart forward to the horse and slide the shafts into the tugs. 1) left side and 2) right side. You may have to slide in one side and then walk around to the other side to check that they are both in the tugs. With ponies and minis you can look over their back- horses not so much. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJJAsDGmfJx5Wrf-KsSVOJSHIBI1XEqCh9EU5SB1Y8PbBMME8Ugq9tcECk_PREBjWHwlL12UBDIQqN7QYbOEUgPWXXApfLiIfBH9l-nAaOdwcpGup371p7PUd7_rwhQINHKkSBlQMgzzbh/s4160/20200808_185150.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3120" data-original-width="4160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJJAsDGmfJx5Wrf-KsSVOJSHIBI1XEqCh9EU5SB1Y8PbBMME8Ugq9tcECk_PREBjWHwlL12UBDIQqN7QYbOEUgPWXXApfLiIfBH9l-nAaOdwcpGup371p7PUd7_rwhQINHKkSBlQMgzzbh/s640/20200808_185150.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Here you can see the shaft is thru the tugs on the harness saddle. There should be a tug stop which will help keep the cart from sliding too far forward hitting your horse in the butt. The tug stop does Not go thru the tugs. This was a mistake I made early on and was corrected at our first Darby. </p><p>Next you will attach the traces to the singletree. 3) right side since you're already over there and 4) left side. There are a few varieties of trace ends and singletree attachments. This cart has what is called a sword end meaning it is flat with 2 holes in the end. The trace slips on and there is either a leather strap or a wire that drops down thru both holes- one on either side of the trace to keep them from sliding off the end. I found some handy pins with rings that I attached to the inside hole with a small cable. The pin drops into the outside hole and the ring flips down to hold the trace on. The cable keeps the rings attached to the cart so they don't get lost. Since everything is still in the beginning stages, the traces are a tad short so I made extensions for now. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbIjPrckHdnoBPwGt_S7om2jb9hnwvqDRf-g8mpAIsKIn0qJT7shUhvHttC_G13VKWUE61-Rjxq5LFlmGPK7cZM7uU__F_orIZ7upXSTZ3N4KlYbE0nt9up588CT9mg2u0n6UPfswmNVay/s4160/20200808_185037.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3120" data-original-width="4160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbIjPrckHdnoBPwGt_S7om2jb9hnwvqDRf-g8mpAIsKIn0qJT7shUhvHttC_G13VKWUE61-Rjxq5LFlmGPK7cZM7uU__F_orIZ7upXSTZ3N4KlYbE0nt9up588CT9mg2u0n6UPfswmNVay/s640/20200808_185037.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Traces attached to singletree. A good rule of thumb is that there should be about 18" between the horses butt and the front of the cart. This gives their back legs room to move at the different gaits without cart interference. The traces can usually be adjusted accordingly. Step 2- slide the nearest trace on and fasten it to the singletree on the cart. For mine it is slide the trace on, push the pin down and flip the loop down. Then go around and do the other side the same way- 3) left side and 4) right side.</p><p>Step 3 is attaching the holdback straps and breeching. Some people attach snaps to their holdbacks and leave them on the cart. If your harness is synthetic and your cart is kept indoors, this is a good way to be able to just snap them on and off quickly which saves time. My harness is leather and my carts stay outdoors so that's not going to work for me. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0j_NRzDsuhvH0-k6sVIFAzTNs1zL-71OZdvMdLx1ZlKkpweRgEivDhKqZMj5wAdDkRaehxVR7Dm-7U0iPBogLSUq2H8vnnxVmXQwFX2muVLGTsoBXbBFrOtkEhuZqG08x8vhbek-wEqov/s4160/20200808_185025.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3120" data-original-width="4160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0j_NRzDsuhvH0-k6sVIFAzTNs1zL-71OZdvMdLx1ZlKkpweRgEivDhKqZMj5wAdDkRaehxVR7Dm-7U0iPBogLSUq2H8vnnxVmXQwFX2muVLGTsoBXbBFrOtkEhuZqG08x8vhbek-wEqov/s640/20200808_185025.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>You can see the breeching strap comes forward from underneath and goes thru the ring on the underside of the shaft. If you run your traces thru the gap between the shaft and the hold back straps, it's a good way to keep them up out of the horses way. Now that the hold back is thru the loop on the outside, the strap goes over the shaft towards the front inside by the horse. Depending on the length of your straps you can wrap them once or twice. When you have it tight enough, now run the end back towards the buckle, going under the wraps on the shaft and over the traces. Buckle accordingly and tuck the ends in the keepers. Do one side and then the other- 5) left side and 6) right side. On a two wheel cart- this is your brakes. This helps stop the cart without letting it run up the back of your horses legs or ass. This also helps hold the cart back off the horse when going down hills. </p><p>Last in the process is to adjust the straps that hold the shafts down and don't allow the shafts to flip up and dump you out the back. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3Tp0OTN3Xvir7ceJoemCJx1h_i_OYD0nprmj6R-8TKzV_pRIwnLRGc-UtSRWtJ9CHavPJ0RsM-aspQyXCJ2rcGZESnMkdLDEtVtsIoaRcTSio4mqMoYJY0V6p2I_J2T-nVawppJJyzwB6/s4160/20200808_185150.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3120" data-original-width="4160" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3Tp0OTN3Xvir7ceJoemCJx1h_i_OYD0nprmj6R-8TKzV_pRIwnLRGc-UtSRWtJ9CHavPJ0RsM-aspQyXCJ2rcGZESnMkdLDEtVtsIoaRcTSio4mqMoYJY0V6p2I_J2T-nVawppJJyzwB6/w640-h480/20200808_185150.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>As shown in the above pic, this strap goes over the shafts and then down the side of the saddle, thru part of the buckle on the girth and then buckles to the undergirth. With the traces running under this strap, it keeps everything neatly held down instead of flopping around and loose- begging for something to get caught up in it. 7) right side and 8) left side. Now your horse is put to the cart and you're ready to drive. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglbCi4Lnb5v-ephX-2piexG6hTUXXpSltL36YY_Wq439aNuzGaFx2ZYGObKIEU75hDD5PooSGUuvpMXNEXSy7EhI6v-g9ZBkpwwyOSpa2prb5bj_VXDRBwMz5RWdOKT-6hXtcU7lcrcEIf/s4160/20200808_185100.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3120" data-original-width="4160" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglbCi4Lnb5v-ephX-2piexG6hTUXXpSltL36YY_Wq439aNuzGaFx2ZYGObKIEU75hDD5PooSGUuvpMXNEXSy7EhI6v-g9ZBkpwwyOSpa2prb5bj_VXDRBwMz5RWdOKT-6hXtcU7lcrcEIf/w641-h480/20200808_185100.jpg" width="641" /></a></div><p>Take your reins down and climb into the cart. When it comes to unhitching it is the same routine just in reverse. It doesn't matter which side you start with, but the last ones buckled are the first ones unbuckled, left side , right side. Breeching- undo one side then the other. Then undo the traces, one side then the other, then pull the cart back taking the shafts out of the tugs... Sometimes it just seems easier that if I'm on one side to just do all of the buckles on that side then go over to the other but when you think about it- if something were to spook your horse and only one side of things was fastened in place, how much more dangerous would that be?</p><p>There are a few issues with this set up but I will discuss that in another post. </p>Cut-N-Jumphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10355349642284506192noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3843857563961192340.post-18233282336848377062020-08-07T16:36:00.001-06:002020-08-07T16:36:01.023-06:00No hoof... We all know the saying- No hoof, no horse. I have been a bit lax on what has been going on with my ponyman and his feet. I have been turning him out while I clean his stall and fill his water tub, mix up his feed and bring him in to eat. I have also had hell finding a good farrier. Kat is not a tough pony to trim. Never has been and likely never will be. He has good feet and stands like a champ. <div><br /></div><div>I had started working him to bring him back into shape with the intent to start driving him again. Problem is- he has been off in one leg or another. At first I thought it might be age creeping up on him and something he might work out of. Didn't happen. </div><div><br /></div><div>Checking his feet for a rock or something maybe wedged in his hoof- he was a bit sensitive in one of his hind hooves. Sensitive enough that cleaning out his hoof he was trying to pull it away. The other one wasn't much different except he was sensitive in the heel rather than the point of the frog. He had some crud down in the groove so I grabbed my bottle of vinegar, a bucket and we headed for the washrack. </div><div><br /></div><div>After rinsing his hoof from the bottom with the spray nozzle to get everything out without causing him pain, I soaked his hind feet in the bucket and poured a healthy dose of vinegar in it. Vinegar is an acid and if he had anything going on- this would "kill it dead-er 'en hell" as a guy I used to work with would say. I'm still not sure how anything could be any more dead than dead, but he would always throw that phrase around and it cracked me up. </div><div><br /></div><div>The vinegar killed it all right. Kat walked off sound. Problem is- the barn aisle is sand and loose dirt, which sticks to a wet hoof and gets all packed in again before he could get to his stall. No this doesn't help. </div><div><br /></div><div>Another issue going on is that he is due for a trim. Checking his feet- the angles were way off in his front feet. The left front heel was as long as my thumb. The right front was about half that and although we have left a little more heel to stand him up- increase the breakover to prevent overreaching- he doesn't grow hoof that fast. There's no reason his heels should've been that long. Yes I was lax on that and I admit it. </div><div><br /></div><div>His hind hooves were also long all over. I started on them because his frogs had issues. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcHanTbhSQaQKr1b2ZJ1ib0y8_jNB3Xmwn7kGf1u92XUqNkA8qte9DEX3eF0IQunuV0xP1ohh37bNegPZY0AaVWeIsya5NZfkoi9M7H8kzE32YHGOE7yF8lathPMSsyhak3V-YYJEnYoQ/s2048/20200718_180459.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcHanTbhSQaQKr1b2ZJ1ib0y8_jNB3Xmwn7kGf1u92XUqNkA8qte9DEX3eF0IQunuV0xP1ohh37bNegPZY0AaVWeIsya5NZfkoi9M7H8kzE32YHGOE7yF8lathPMSsyhak3V-YYJEnYoQ/s640/20200718_180459.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>In the picture above, despite the dirt you can still see how long his heel was on the left hind as well as the hole that went way down into the frog. Yeah I would be a bit off too. The right hind looked even worse. Deeper cracks, several small holes and a place right at the hairline that looked like he blew out an abscess or something and lost a couple layers of skin. It's so nice having a pony who is so well behaved.<br />

Everyone knows my pony is an awesome little guy. Personality galore and just so fun to be around. Well last week he scared me a bit. The lady at the barn with the horse next to him sent me a text.... </div>
<br />
He's not eating and still has pellets from last night.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxLoQcmoWgYgwW8ABT1zAEXZpEtQuYNu5iFiBGnRRXFWfd0GpvNtgmLiiv-vOpY_iLQwCsw9n_VHY65xoDHiQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He's pawing the ground and just doesn't 'look right'. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzBzTrLxfb2wNjN9yvZ9YlDmJjw5fsT0-hVT66mZ9KCnN3Aj9xg31opJLQe1BvNUlu6bVfGzqhIhhtV9Ei4_Q' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then the second video and "Something's not right." For the first time in his life he coliced on me. Shit! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I sent her a text- letting her know to tell the little brat that if I have to come out there, he's going to get a shot in the neck. Lol. Well things weren't getting any better so I told her to put him in the cross ties or tie him in the stall to keep him up until I get there. This was about 20 minutes before I was off work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I text my man to let him know I'm headed straight to the barn to tend to Kat and hopefully he will be fine. By the time I get there, just about everyone has listened to his gut, searched his stall for poop, walked him and been very concerned about him. Kat had a look about him that he didn't feel good. I gave him 4cc of banamine IV and man did he perk right up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Of course I took his feed away, left him grass hay and he gave me a dirty look. A little while later he's banging his feed bucket looking for food. I gave him a few handfulls of his grain to pacify him. Kat wasn't thrilled with that but he was happy to get what he could.<br />
<br />
Thankfully the next morning he was back to normal. I know because just about everyone at the barn was texting me- "He's up and looks fine. There's poop in his stall. His hay is all gone. He's at the gate wanting treats.... "<br />
<br />
I'm glad he's okay and will be around for a while longer. I told him he has to give me another 21 years. Last night when I brought him in from turnout I told him how much I love him and all his little quirks. I can't imagine losing him and he's Not allowed to scare me like that anymore. I know at some point that day will come, but for now he's fine and going strong.Cut-N-Jumphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10355349642284506192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3843857563961192340.post-4380842856650437582019-08-06T19:38:00.000-06:002019-08-06T19:38:09.057-06:00Sleep over<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Everyone should have a pony in their back yard, right? And everyone should have a pony like mine. He is such a good boy, which was why I was able to bring him home for an overnight stay. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was taking him to the vet since he seems to have some swelling or a growth on his urethra. It has dripped blood on his back legs and can't be comfortable so we were going for another opinion. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been giving him antibiotics in hopes of killing off whatever is causing this but that wasn't working so we will go see the vet. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since the vet office opens early in the morning and its closer to the house than the barn, he came home to stay the night. Let me just say he did not tear up the grass and never once let out a sound. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

My biggest concern was that he would end up in the pool. My pony has the kind of personality that I could definitely see him doing it. But actually when I got in the pool after he was settled and everything unloaded, he was concerned and watching but didn't freak out or bolt.<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I swam laps and went towards him- the kicking and splashing got him all wild eyed and he took a few steps back to get away but still keep his eye on things... All in all it was like having a big, goofy dog in the yard. </div>

The good news is that everything checked out at the vet. She said it looks like a 'summer sore', keep the area soaked with fly spray, gave me some kind of blue concoction to put on it twice daily. She also said to worm him with Ivermectin every 10 days for 3 treatments.<br />

As everyone can guess, he was eating up all the attention. Everyone noticed him, wanted to pet him, admired him and commented on how well behaved he is, how quiet, he's probably spoiled (absolutely!) and couldn't believe his age. Even the lady at the front desk had to go out back to see him. He loved every minute of it. Of course he did. Because he's Katman! </div>

Everyone loves my pony. And why not? His color and build makes him stand out everywhere we go. When people get around him and get to know his personality, he's totally in his element. Kat loves attention and plays it up to get it from whoever he can.<br />
<br />
Naturally when we changed barns a few months ago, he has again been the center of attention. Part of this is because there are a few families at the barn with kids. The kids adore him and he adores them too, but he is not a 'kids pony' in any sense of the words. You might be asking "What does she mean by that?"<br />
<br />
Kat has always been good around kids from the time he was a baby. When I bought him all those years ago, we figured his age was around 6 months old. My daughter was still young and would go in his stall armed with a brush and a hoof pick. She had this thing about cleaning hooves and he would stand there patiently while she did each one. He soaked it all in while she brushed him head to toe. <br />
<br />
Last week at the barn I was approached by one of the women that boards there. I have yet to figure out why she even has a horse. She has other boarders feed him, turn him out, bring him in and she only cleans his stall when he's not in it. She also doesn't ride him so the horse has quite the easy life when you think about it.<br />
<br />
She told me that the kids at the barn would love it if I brought the cart out and drove them all around on it. I told her that's exactly why I DON'T bring it out. She looked at me a little puzzled by that statement. Then she starts asking if he is trained to be ridden and if I have a saddle for him? No and No. I have had kids on him and while he never did anything wrong, he has made it clear every time that he didn't really care for the idea, so that's that.<br />
<br />
Her last statement on the idea was that "It's to bad the kids at the barn don't get to play with your pony, ride him and enjoy him."<br />
<br />
I just agreed with her that "Yes, it's too bad." There's no point in going any further in the discussion with someone like that. He's my pony and Kat has more than earned his keep. If I never drive him again (which is up to me) and all he does is eat and shit to live out his days, so be it.<br />
<br />
My friend from the last barn was asking "Why is it all of a sudden Your responsibility to entertain everyone else's kids? He's a competition pony, not a kids pony! Obviously she's clueless. Besides that, Kat is such a cool pony because of all the work and training you put into him. Why let them ruin that and him? " <br />
<br />
I'm sure she will try suggesting this again. When she does, I'm just going to flip the conversation on her. If she thinks the kids at the barn should have a horse to ride and enjoy- Why don't she let them use hers? Besides- their parents each have a horse, why aren't they riding them? After not being hitched for almost 5 months, I took my cart to the barn and put my little man to. How did he do, you ask? He rocked it of course! What else would he do????<br />
<br />
Obviously I didn't get any picks while driving so I will add those from ground driving a few nights ago.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course we started out walking on the lunge line. This allows him to loosen up before asking much more of him. Since all we were doing is long line work, he is only wearing the harness saddle. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

After a few laps around like this is when I ask him to jog or trot. When he loosens up in the trot and there is a noticeable change in his gait, I will either let him stop or if he's feeling good, I will allow him to lope. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJob4ihqyem0DDABw1XZAK9r1OoVHOSjNq1XCuEAFjaf18Lqjn8iLd2L1KnxVisxhiQG3wBjKFHGY1hWesxg7QeYjMHyjJsD2oniAeNJqLAtAYf3Bg7Uqn4CHIagEYdLIR_aGLT4HJKbqr/s640/0722181926d.jpg" width="640" /></span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">He's sporting hs new boots... The blue string is baling twine holding the tugs to the saddle. This way if I ned to run the lines thu them, there isn't as much swing and the line stays close to his side. </span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxDIjNrSQqoU6cVzim4nEkU4_5QCFJE3usOoL1iXNpHV2JS7k6h8zR9GEziD0iKZkjcrp8g6Gcc1V327nLd3c6aFnPGpE157V2ZmcG4ybCa1pfKsNJjFSnTymmoyTVXs07gej8BqElkRCl/s640/0722181942_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">Now that he's in the lines, he tries to give me some grief. Because he's like that and he can. lol While his head is up and he's not on the bit or in the bridle (on or behind the verticle), he is finding his balance and driving up under himself from behind. He is gaping at the mouth in protest as I start asking him to bend. We are back to doing long line work wearing the snaffle- in the beginning we switched away from this because he was putting his tongue over the bit. </span></div>
<br />

Some horses and ponies do this all the time, where others try once or twice, give in and that's it. This is his way of expressing himself. My mare turns her head to the side and does this weird thing with her mouth. One of the things about working with horses is to recognize their subtleties. They all have these little ways of showing us they like or don't like something. We as their owners or trainers need to learn what they are and when they do it. We did some walking, trotting and also loping, both directions of course. Our upward transitions were easy to get and the downward transitions came just as easily. I have always told my Little Man, "Bring it down to the trot" and he does it so effortlessly. Then I tell him "Easy" and he slows the jog, "Bring it down to the walk" and Boom! He gives it to me with nothing further. A few soft whups and then whoooaaa and he shuts it Down. Most of the time I don't even get to the whoa because he has already shut it down. He knows it's coming next. </span></span></div>

When it's your own horse, they're even better. But when it's your horse that you've not only raised, but also trained- they're the best.<br />
<br />
These are a bit blurry, but you can still see the lift, suspension and extension in his movement. I was lunging my little guy the other day and he was really moving like a little Rock Star. And I'm still always amazed by my Katman.<br />

After 6 years of a lotta use, scubbing, an alteration to make them fit bettier and having the straps replaced twice- they have split up the back and are literally falling apart. Sadly enough since they are no longer available in white, I have to go with another brand. </div>

People with their cell phones, people with their pro camera set ups, complete with an assortment of lenses. I managed to get a short clip of video of a couple with their pair of Friesians as they went cruising across the grass by the pond. I was hoping to get them at the canter but by the time I got the camera phone going I was only able to get the trot. They've shown in AZ before and their actually from Round Top.<br />
<br />
The lady parked next to us had the only entry for Long Ears, a mini Donkey called Nick. Sally's friend <a href="http://amywink.com/" target="_blank">Amy Wink</a> a fellow driver, was there taking pictures and got a few of us. With her permission I share them here....<br />

<br />
Of course we entered these! That's a no brainer considering our past performances and how my little man loves games classes. There have been shows before, where we did okay or even tanked in the main ring, went out to the cones courses, taken our fustrations out on those and got it out of our system- winning those classes pretty easily and boosting our spirits again......<br />
<br />
In a typical competition, they measure the widest part of your cart and depending on what level you're showing at- depends on how close the cones are set. Beginner/Training Level is set pretty wide and it is trotting only. As you move up to Prelim, Intermediate and Advanced- the cones are moved closer in and you're allowed to run. As an attempt to keep things fair for everyone, they limited us to trotting only and they did not measure our carts or move the cones at all. The cones were set at 2 meters wide and since my cart is just over 1 meter in width- I had plenty of room to work.<br />
<br />
Fault and Out is just as it sounds. There was a course of 10 cones, you must take them in order in the right direction and you get 2 points per cone. You do the course until you knock down a ball. When you knock a ball down, you continue on thru the next cone where your time will stop. You will get points for the last cone. <span style="font-family: sans-serif;">You are allowed 2 minutes and if you make it thru all 10, you start thru them again and keep going until your time runs out and they blow the whistle.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKXF1QiOlexH4yW1gZCHwIt3ZIy3sKKHgwGTqC_x1G2nuD5CjA3RoqxumxNAEqJyIINtcw3zNJLJnl9uhsr-x5lTFQPDPVYZojFZC2x-epuaszz9jaJk4_3nIJBmj0GITvqDa9T81yL4PK/s1600/0316182235a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKXF1QiOlexH4yW1gZCHwIt3ZIy3sKKHgwGTqC_x1G2nuD5CjA3RoqxumxNAEqJyIINtcw3zNJLJnl9uhsr-x5lTFQPDPVYZojFZC2x-epuaszz9jaJk4_3nIJBmj0GITvqDa9T81yL4PK/s640/0316182235a.jpg" width="360" /></a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: sans-serif;">This was the course for </span><span style="font-family: sans-serif;">Fault and Out. Kat & I made it thru the course once and started back thru it again. We were making the turn back around to line up for cone 7 when the whistle blew. At 2 points per cone, yeah we pretty much killed it. </span><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: sans-serif;">Your Route My Route is a bit more fun. Your Route is listed on the map.There are another 10 cones that must be taken in order, in the right direction. Once you go thru the last cone- It's game on! The portion for</span><span style="font-family: sans-serif;"> My Route- is open to interpretation. You have to go thru the 10 cones again, but... You can take them in any order, in any direction, but you can only go thru them each once. The start/finish line is 'live' the whole time, which means you go thru it to start and stop your time only and must be driven the right direction also.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG9nQafeOJgCGPHRptRx8Iq8hcHBszC0GzzfnELhQJ-CHJ0IDdqEolkX2ZoJY-E2_J2HNqFUMR0MoCbe4u-5Fhrv62WoNeAZAdBAsNoiBeVq0kZ1fkEzZVGYKezovYtAEn0BhoxluJ6eBq/s640/0316182235.jpg" width="360" /></span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">Your Route My Route? Well I had a plan when I went in..... Coming out of cone 10, I thought I would circle around to the left picking off cones 7 & 6, going back across thru cone 4, down to cone 1 and 2. Make a hard left and get cone 8, change rein to make a right and go thru cone 9, another right to go get cone 3 and down to the rail, make a left and pick up cone 5 then left to finish with cone 10 and thru the finish line. </span></div>
<span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">What really happened? Coming off of cone 6, I went thru cone 9 instead of cone 4 because they were actually a bit closer together and I got a bit confused. (I blame it on our speed and driver error. lol) Thinking on the fly is something you have to be able to do in times like this so I figured I would 'flip' the order' of the two cones. I took 9 instead of 4 so where I would've taken 9- I took 4 instead and still picked them all up. </span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">The Pleasure Drive/ Marathon class was more of a Hunter Pace. There is a course distance with an "Optimal Time" which is not disclosed. There was 2 'hazards' with 4 gates each that you had to go thru in the right order, in the right direction. Your job as the driver is to navigate the course from start to finish and try to come as close to the Optimal Time allowed. If you're going the right speed, you will hit it without issue.</span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: sans-serif;">The correct 'speed' for ponies to be traveling was 12kph. I'm not sure what that works out to be for us and since I know we almost always get 'dinged' on time for being too fast, I decided to change it up some. There was a hill on the course and across the top of it as it went around the lake- the footing was not the best conditions. For this I allowed Katman to walk. Since it was up on the hill and pretty much right in the middle of the property, it was visible to all. Which meant that pretty much everybody seen us walking and when we got back in, there were plenty of people asking about it. We managed to stay in the ribbons and tied for 3rd. </span></span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: sans-serif;">So how did we do? Well of course we smoked everything in the two cones classes. That was pretty much a given and came as expected. Trying to keep things fair by setting the cones wide, really wasn't all that fair in a way because for anyone who has done cones before- it made it hella easy to speed things up. It took off all the pressure of having to be a bit more accurate in leaving the balls up. </span></span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: sans-serif;">While everyone else was doing a normal, working trot, we were doing a very extended trot almost the entire time. Kat did break gait and go into a canter a few times, but you are allowed 5 strides to get them back to a trot without being penelized. Fun fact- If driving a pair or multiples, if one horse breaks gait but the other horse remains steady and trots the entire time, you don't get penelized. </span></span><span style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: sans-serif;">Our efforts for the weekend got us 2 blue ribbons (1st place), 2 yellow ribbons (3rd) and 1 white ribbon (4th). Not a bad haul for a hella lot of fun. </span></span>Cut-N-Jumphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10355349642284506192noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3843857563961192340.post-43749744996184967652018-03-25T03:02:00.003-06:002018-03-25T03:02:57.946-06:00Pot O' Gold- ring classesLast weekend I had several opportunities to get the photos for the next post of putting a horse to a cart, but since we were in a constant state of Hurry Up & Wait, they didn't happen. They will come, I promise. Just not yet for now.<br />
<br />
Since the pony at the barn that I have been working with has been on a bit of a hiatus in her training, I dusted off the harness and worked on bringing my ponyman back into work. I mean, Pine Hill is in May again and who knows? We might be able to go..... At least this time I would be giving him a better chance at being in shape before we did it instead of 2 weeks to throw things together.<br />
<br />
Kat is admittedly getting up there in years and after being asked by my man what the ratio of horse to human years is, we kind of agreed it is somewhere around 3 years to our 1. When you think about it, horses live to around 20-30 years and we humans live to around 70-80. If you multiply 20-30 years by 3 you get 60-90 years so we're somewhere in the ballpark.<br />
<br />
With the little man aging, I keep thinking that at some point he is going to eventually slow down and is not going to be AS competitive as he has been. (I'm trying to be realistic people. Stick with me here.) So we found an upcoming show and sent our entries in. Our number for the event? 19 just like his age. I didn't even make that connection until well into Sunday.... Doh!<br />
<br />
Saturday we were entered in Turnout, Working, Reinsmanship and Ladies to drive. Turnout has never been our strong suit, just like dressage hasn't been in the CDE's or ADT's. It's important to know your limitations. We ribboned in Turnout, though the class was small. It was for modern carriages (metal) or traditional (wooden) and competition for either one was pretty tough. On to Working Pony and we did our best but did not pin in that or Ladies to Drive. Ribbons were only thru 4th and Ladies to drive had 12 entries. They split the class with mini and long ears going seperately from the ponies, horses and multiples (pairs or 4 up).<br />
<br />
One of the judges comments to me in the lineup of the Turnout class was to watch the curb chain of the bit, that it doesn't pinch his lip when I use my reins and engage it. I had put him in the butterfly and used the curb setting for the reins since I thought he might be a bit fresh and I would need a little something more. Instead, during our break between Working and Ladies to Drive, I switched him back to the plain ring snaffle. With Reinsmanship being after the lunchbreak, we got to take about a 2 hour break.<br />
<br />
Reinsmanship Pony was a pretty good sized class and after our rail work, we were given the instructions for our pattern. The judge likes to use simple patterns that focus on the basics. I have shown under her before and like she said, "It seperates the men from the boys. It might be simple, but if you haven't done your basics it will show now." <br />
<br />
We were to come forward out of the line and go to the left to the rail, then follow it around behind the line up across the short side of the arena. Coming down the long side, there was a pair of cones set up parallel with the rail on both sides of the arena and one pair set up in front of the judge. We were to make a small, two loop serpentine- left and go straight thru the first set of cones and across the arena, make a right coming thru the next set of cones, another right coming up the center line and stop with the ponies nose at the cones. We were to stand for a few seconds and establish the halt, then back 4 steps, halt, come forward the same 4 steps and halt and salute.<br />
<br />
We did everything correctly until the reining back part. We did our 4 steps and halted and I saluted. As soon as I did it, I thought "Whooooops. Shit!" We did our 4 steps forward, halted and saluted again. Yep, I blew that one! Hahahaha Since there was plenty of time, the judge came thru the lineup and explained to each of us, things she seen where we could improve. "Part of the rein back, is to walk forward." Ummm, yeah....<br />
<br />
When she had come to us, Kat decided he needed her attention. The moment she started speaking to us, he backed up so he could be near her and hear what she had to say. I asked him where he was going? The judge asked him where he was going? When I explained to her what he was doing, we all had a good laugh. Kat wanted the judge to explain things to Him. Because in his mind- "I've got this. Her back there in the cart? Yeah, I have no idea what's going on with that." As he rolls his eyes and shakes his head...<br />
<br />
She placed us 4th in a good size class so I have no complaints.<br />
